China Telecom Signs With Microsoft For IM

Microsoft has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Telecom to offer a co-branded instant messaging (IM) client based on Microsoft's Windows Live platform. Under the agreement, Microsoft, its Internet portal MSN China and China Telecom will jointly develop, promote and operate the new product. The new product will offer the basic functionality of Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger as well as China Telecom's communication and Internet services.

Unicom Nears WCDMA Launch, Telecom Prepares Push-to-Talk

China Unicom has completed construction and testing of its WCDMA trial network in over 60 Shanghai locations and is awaiting a 3G license to disseminate the network within 2-3 months.

China Telecom exhibited its push-to-talk CDMA service on Tuesday. The service, now in final testing stages, is scheduled for release in mid-2009.

China Telecom Adds CDMA Offerings To "One Home"

China Telecom integrated CDMA business into its fixed-line and Internet package "One Home" in Jiangsu province on November 1 to test the service prior to its nationwide release. Jiangsu subscribers can pay monthly fees of RMB 129 for 2MB and 400 free mobile minutes, RMB 199 for 3MB and 600 minutes or RMB 229 for 4MB and 600 minutes. Non-CDMA packages go for RMB 98, RMB 188 and RMB 228.

MIIT: China Nears 80M Broadband Subscribers

China had 79.35 million broadband subscribers by the end of September, 12.93 million more than in the first nine months of 2007, reported by Zhu Hongren, Operation and Monitoring Bureau director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Domestic telephone subscribers, including fixed-line and mobile users, reached 977 million, increasing 64.25 million from the year-ago period, said Zhu.

China's software industry revenue increased 32.8% year-on-year in the first months of 2008, according to the director.

Carrefour to Launch Mobile Services in Taiwan

Supermarket group Carrefour plans to launch mobile services in Taiwan as an MVNO. The company will offer services through its subsidiary Carrefour Telecommunications using Chunghwa Telecom's network, the Taipei Times writes. During a promotional period, the company will offer customers to earn points at its Carrefour stores which can be redeemed for call credit. Carrefour also offer telecommunications services in several European countries.

Unicom Revenue Up 3% YoY In First 9 Months

China Unicom announced financials for the first three quarters of 2008 on Thursday. The company booked total revenue of RMB 52.48 billion, up 3% year-on-year, with GSM contributing revenue of RMB 48.5 billion. Company profit was RMB 6.99 billion, up 34.9% from RMB 5.18 billion in the first nine months of 2008, with basic earnings per share of RMB 0.51.

China Unicom completed the transfer of its CDMA business to China Telecom for RMB 43.8 billion on October 1.

New China Unicom To Establish Mobile Internet Subsidiary For 3G

China Unicom announced plans on Monday to establish a mobile Internet subsidiary for 3G network construction and maintenance. China Unicom plans to spend RMB 100 billion to construct a combined 2G/3G network in the next two to three years.

China Unicom now has 28 departments in its company headquarters. The telecom company previously announced plans to reduce departments to 17 from more than 45 and establish only marketing-related departments in its south China subsidiaries.

China Telecom On WiFi/CDMA Strategy

China Telecom plans to begin pre-commercial service of its WiFi/CDMA business in the first quarter of 2009. China Telecom is negotiating cooperation with Shanghai Media Group for WiFi/CDMA and plans to expand the business to include in-home WiFi and CDMA mobile complex application packages. A new service targeting personal mobile users, "Tian Yi," is scheduled to be released during the first quarter of 2009, reports 163.com. China Telecom began to testing its WiFi handsets in October and plans to cover 25,000 WiFi hotspots before the end of 2008.

Lenovo, China Mobile To Release Google Android Handset

Lenovo Mobile plans to partner with China Mobile to release a handset based on the Google Android mobile operating system between February and March of 2009, reported by Lenovo Mobile brand communication department general manager Wang Yan at P&T/Expo Comm China 2008. The event is being held in Beijing from October 21 through 25.
